How to Block and Retrieve a Lost or Stolen SIM Card

Losing a smartphone isn't just about losing an expensive device; it puts your digital identity, UPI accounts, and banking OTPs at immediate risk. If your phone or SIM card is lost or stolen, your absolute first priority must be blocking the SIM card to prevent misuse.

CRITICAL ACTION: In addition to blocking your SIM, we highly recommend filing an e-FIR or a Missing Article Report with your local police station. Use the CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal by the Government of India (ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in) to completely block the IMEI of your stolen handset across all networks.

Step 1: How to Block Your Lost SIM Card

You can block your SIM card by calling your respective telecom operator's customer care hotline from any other mobile number. Be prepared to answer security questions to verify your identity (such as the name on the ID proof, date of birth, last recharge amount, or alternate mobile number).

Operator Toll-Free Helpline (Call from any network) Alternative Method
Airtel 121 or 198 (from Airtel) / 1800-103-111 (from any network) Email: 121@in.airtel.com
Reliance Jio 199 (from Jio) / 1800-889-9999 (from any network) Log in to Jio.com > Settings > Suspend and Resume
Vodafone Idea (Vi) 199 (from Vi) / 1800-123-4567 (from any network) Email: customercare@vodafoneidea.com

Step 2: Retrieving a Replacement SIM

Once your SIM is securely blocked, you can retrieve the same mobile number on a new physical SIM card. This process is known as SIM Replacement or SIM Swap.

  • Visit a Retail Store: You must physically visit an authorized retailer, like Pratheek Enterprises, or a company-owned gallery (Airtel Store, JioMart Digital, or Vi Mini Store).
  • Bring Original ID: Bring the exact original Aadhaar Card or Voter ID that was used to activate the connection initially. The system requires biometric authentication (fingerprint or face scan) of the original owner.
  • Nominal Fee: Operators charge a nominal SIM replacement fee, usually ranging between ₹25 and ₹50, depending on the service provider.

What happens after I get my replacement SIM?

Once the biometric eKYC is completed, your new SIM card will be handed to you. It usually takes 2 to 4 hours for the network to activate on the new SIM.

Note: As per TRAI security guidelines, all SMS services (both incoming and outgoing) will remain blocked for exactly 24 hours after a SIM replacement to prevent OTP-based banking fraud. Calling and internet data will work normally.
