Fiber Broadband Installation: What to Expect
Upgrading from an old copper DSL line or a mobile 4G hotspot to a true Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) connection is the biggest leap you can make in home internet. Providers like JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber offer gigabit speeds, zero buffering, and symmetrical upload/download rates. However, unlike a mobile SIM, fiber requires physical wiring into your home.
If you have just booked a new connection, here is a detailed breakdown of the installation process, where you should place your router, and what documents to keep ready.
Step 1: Feasibility Check and Booking
Before any wiring happens, the operator must verify that a Fiber Distribution Box (FAT box) is installed on a pole or in the basement near your building. When you submit a lead online, an executive will visit your location to check feasibility. If ports are available, you will pay the advance rental/installation fee online and schedule an installation slot.
Step 2: KYC and Documentation
On the day of installation, the engineer will ask for digital KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. You must provide:
- Original Aadhaar Card: The engineer will scan the QR code or take a picture of the original document. Photocopies are generally not accepted for digital KYC.
- Live Photo: A live photograph of the applicant will be taken on the spot.
- Alternate Number: An OTP will be sent to your mobile number to digitally sign the Customer Application Form (CAF).
Step 3: The Fiber Cabling Process
This is the most critical physical step. Fiber optic cables are made of microscopic glass strands. They are incredibly fast but physically fragile. They cannot be bent at sharp 90-degree angles, or the internal glass will snap, permanently breaking the connection.
- The engineer will pull a black drop cable from the street pole to your house.
- Inside your home, this cable will be routed to your chosen router location. You may need to allow the engineer to drill a small hole in a window frame or wall to pass the cable inside.
- The black cable will be terminated into a small white box on your wall called a Patch Panel or Rosette.
- A delicate yellow cable (the patch cord) connects this wall box to the back of your Wi-Fi router.
Step 4: Router (ONT) Placement and Setup
The device provided by Airtel and Jio is technically an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) combined with a Wi-Fi router. To get the best coverage:
- Central Location: Ask the engineer to place the router in the most central room of your house, ideally at waist or chest height.
- Avoid Obstructions: Do not hide the router inside a closed wooden cabinet, behind a TV, or next to a microwave, as these severely block Wi-Fi signals.
- Dual-Band Setup: The engineer will configure two Wi-Fi networks for you: a 2.4GHz band (slower, but reaches through walls further) and a 5GHz band (ultra-fast, but limited to the room the router is in). Make sure both are active.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do I have to pay the installation engineer?
No. You should pay all installation charges, security deposits, and plan rentals directly through the official Airtel Thanks or MyJio app during the booking phase. Engineers are not supposed to collect cash for standard installations.
Can I use my own Wi-Fi router?
You MUST use the ONT router provided by the operator because it authenticates the fiber optic light signal. However, if you have a massive house and need better range, you can plug your own high-end Wi-Fi router into the operator's ONT using a LAN cable and use it as an Access Point/Mesh network.
Does the connection include a Landline?
Yes, all JioFiber and Airtel Xstream connections include a free landline number with unlimited voice calling anywhere in India. However, they do not provide the physical telephone instrument. You must purchase a standard telephone from the market and plug it into the "TEL" port on the back of the router.
